Meet in front of the Museum of Monterey (MOM)
on Custom House Plaza, Fisherman’s Wharf parking.
Join Monica on a 2 hour walking tour through historic Monterey which once was the capital of Spanish and Mexican California. While France and England predominated the eastern seaboard, in California that role was played by Spain and later Mexico. Here in Monterey the first American flag was raised in conquest of the entire American West. California’s story is one of Empires succeeding each other, of becoming a state and a part of a new nation, of gold being discovered and of the rush which followed and changed this state forever.
Historic Monterey, where it all began, is a hidden treasure full of historic homes and secret gardens. Here stand California’s oldest, continuously used Catholic Church and the first Mexican and American government buildings in the west. Here California’s constitution was written and signed, and the great questions of the day were debated – slavery, boundaries, women’s rights, and citizenship.
You will visit it all with your guide, Monica Hudson, who will share her in depth knowledge of California’s history and how it is intimately tied with Monterey. She will connect the American history we all know well to the history of the American west of which many visitors know very little. She includes stories on the lives and works of our areas many painters and writers. Monterey’s still existing adobe houses serve to illustrate the typical early architecture, and the beautiful hidden gardens with their wealth of year round color and unusual choices of plant material gives her the opportunity to delight the garden enthusiast.
The story of California’s past will unfold as you make your way through the streets of the old capital. This tour, given by Monica dressed in authentic period clothing, will make you feel as if you were taking a glimpse back to that long ago time.
